Downtown Hammond art tour

DowntownHammond.com proudly presents the Downtown Hammond Art Tour featuring 8 art spaces and 300+ artists. Be sure to join us Saturday, May 19, 11AM til 3PM.

Discover Hammond's Art District! From SideCar Gallery on the north to the Merge Building on the south, these art venues roughly parallel Hohman Avenue within a mile of each other in Downtown Hammond. There is plenty of free parking adjacent to each location for those who would prefer to drive.

Hammond Arts Center, 5832 Hohman

Hammond Public Library, 564 State Street(2 blocks east of Hohman)

Merge Building, 5920 Hohman

Paul Henry's Art Gallery, 416 Sibley(just east of Hohman and Sibley)

SideCar Gallery, 411 Huehn(corner of Huehn and Hohman)

Substation No. 9, 435 Fayette(1/2 Block east of Hohman)

Towle Theater, 5205 Hohman

Each venue will have a recently installed exhibit or group show and some will have exhibit opening receptions during the Tour.

The Blue Room Cafe has devoted its space to display the work of specific artists for over two years. Currently installed is the photography of John Brudek. Mr. Brudek considers two main approaches with his work: decorative efforts which carry color and flair; and what he calls his "street work," those images which depict urban figures in urban settings that offer strong societal statements. Both types of work will be represented here.

The Hammond Arts Center recently opened and has already hosted three exhibits. The work of Northwest Indiana artist Wiley Dummich will be featured during the Hammond Art Tour, and Mr. Dummich's opening reception will run concurrently during these hours. Both the photography and paintings of Wiley Dummich will be on display.

Hammond Public Library has exhibited art in its space for many decades. The paintings of East Chicago native, Peter Anton, will be on display for the Art Tour. Mr. Anton painted for many years out of the public eye until he was given an exhibition by Chicago’s Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art. The current library exhibit is a largely autobiographical account of his life, the people and places that have been a part of it.

Merge Building is a recently opened contemporary office space, tastefully designed and decorated and devoted to the Arts, community issues and local projects and charities. Over thirty regional artists are installed at this time, and MergeArts will continue to showcase their creative efforts with regular shows and exhibits. The ever-growing network of Merge friends and guests has already generated increased awareness for the Arts and has provided financial support for local charities and community groups.

Paul Henry's Art Gallery was opened in October of 2008 in the vintage P.H. Mueller Sons Hardware building, a fixture in Downtown Hammond since 1887. Currently displayed is the work of over 150 artists, mostly regional but some from as far away as Utah, California and Alaska. Recently installed is a series of drawings by Lou Shields, "Soul Yard Revisited," which depicts the environs, culture and personalities of the seminal period of American Roots Music of the 1920's and 1930's.

SideCar Gallery has been opened for two years and has brought a true, contemporary feel to the art scene in Northwest Indiana. SideCar offers inspirational installations, reflecting a specific theme in each exhibit that narrows the distance between art and space and viewer with fine-tuned focus. Just opened on May 12th is SideCar's latest installation,"In Circles" new work by Surabhi Ghosh of Eugene, Oregon and Karolina Gnatowski of Chicago. This is art, in the words of gallerist Michael Kaysen, that exists "somewhere between a domestic space and the white cube."

Substation No. 9 has been on Fayette Street in the old NIPSCO power relay building for over ten years. A satellite of South Shore Arts, this facility has continued to offer art classes and exhibits on a regular basis. Local artist Dawn Diamantopoulos will have an exhibit opening reception during the hours of the Tour, "History Repeats." This series of layered drawings is based on the artist's feeling that similar ideas and emotions through her life have reappeared at different times and in different circumstances, to be acted upon in accordance with her interim experience.

The Towle theatre has been an established venue for community theater for nine years, and has devoted its downstairs foyer to the display of local artists since its inception. Currently, emerging artist Haley Fieldhouse has provided a number of her photographs to fill the hallway. Much of this work is from a self portrait series that examined the artist's life each day through an entire year, reflecting her emotions, imagination and developing skills as a photographer.

We hope you join us for the inaugural Downtown Hammond Art Tour. The work of 300 artists is on display in the eight spaces. For further information please call 219-931-4005(Merge), 219-937-8780(Towle) or 219-678-5015(Paul Henry's)
